Child abduction: is it always the mother?

by | Dec 11, 2022

Child Abduction: Is it always the mother? When the Hague Convention on Child Abduction was written, it was in most cases the father who decided to bring the child back to his home country. The father would then take care of the child himself or leave the child in the home country with his family, who would then take care of the child. Is that still the case?

The Dutch Centre for International Child Abduction (IKO) has given the numbers for 2021, concerning the Netherlands.

By whom were the children abducted, and to which country, or from where?

The press statement shows, among other things:

Is it always the mother?

In 67% of the cases, the mother abducted the child,
In 29% of the cases, the father abducted the child,
In 4% of the cases, a family member abducted the child.

Children abducted from the Netherlands were mostly abducted to:

– Poland
– Turkey
– Belgium
– Russia
– Spain

Children abducted to the Netherlands were mostly abducted from:

– Spain
– Germany
– Belgium

What is the age of abducted children?

Of the 229 children,
– 113 children were under the age of 5
– 93 children were between 6 and 12 years old
– 23 children were between 13 and 17 years old.

There were 229 child abduction cases in the Netherlands in 2021.
In 2020, there were 224.
