What the Central Authority can do for you
What the Central Authority can do for a parent varies from country to country.
These are some of the things several Central Authorities are willing to do:
- Explaining the Hague Convention on Child Abduction;
- Explaining the possibility of submitting a return application;
- Offering assistance in locating the child, with the help of other local and international authorities and organisations;
- Explain to parents the options available to prevent the child from being taken to another country (again) without the other parent’s consent;
- Explaining whether the assistance of a lawyer is necessary;
- Referring to an experienced lawyer;
- Explaining whether there is a possibility of applying for subsidised legal aid;
- Approach the other parent and ask that parent to cooperate voluntarily in returning the child to the country of origin.
Offer the parents the possibility of mediation.

For a number of countries, we provide a list of lawyers and mediators who can assist you in drafting an international parenting plan, in preventing conflicts over the primary residence of the children, and in negotiating and litigating over the children in the event of relocation or child abduction.
